SPC ’29; Sylvester W. Holsten, Dennison, Iowa, died March 24, 2007, in Tecumseh, Nebraska. He was buried in Denison, Iowa. He served parishes in Sumner, Moorfield, Curtis, Malcolm, Platte Center Nebraska; Yorktown, Sioux City, Dennison, Iowa.
SPCH ’40, SPC ’42; Ronald W. Huber, Bonney Lake, Washington, died June 12, 2007.
SPCH ’45, SPC ’47; William H. Lange, Peoria, Illinois, died November 1, 2007, from a stroke. He served parishes in Los Angeles, Denver, Omaha, Topeka, Kansas and Peoria, Illinois.
SPCH ’49, SPC ’51; Paul R. Schmidt, Springfield, Illinois, died November 20, 2007, in Springfield. He had served parishes in Bel Air, Maryland; Fairview Heights and Matton, Illinois. He also served as First Vice President of the Central Illinois District.
SPC ’55, Donald Loesch and SPC ’56, Carol Davis Loesch, Hiawatha, Iowa, write, “Don and Carol are officially retired. But Don serves as part-time pastoral assistant at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Marion, Iowa. Carol teaches piano to 12 students. Don and Carol provide worship services to Hiawatha Care Center two Sunday afternoons each month. And, Don is leading an effort to develop a Lutheran high school in the Cedar Rapids area. We live near the families of of our son and daughter.”
SPCH ’56; Lee Schluckebier, Seward, Professor Emeritus of Education at Concordia University, Seward, is currently Project Director for the Lutheran University in Papua, New Guinea.
SPCH ’56; Alston Kirk, Corpus Christi, Texas, retired from the Navy in 1994 as a captain in the Chaplain Corps. He retired from the full-time ministry in 2004. He remains active as Pastor Emeritus, visiting shut-ins and teaching Bible study classes. His new email is captkirk6@grandecom.net.
SPCH ’56; Herbert Harfst, Richmond, Virginia, has learned from tests and xrays that he is now cancer free. “Praise the Lord,” shouts classmate Steve Six from the other side of America in Spring Valley, California.
SPCH ’57, SPC ’59; L. Dean Hempelmann, Las Cruces, New Mexico, retired as Executive Director of the Board for Parish Education for the synod. The January issue of the LCMS Reporter includes an insert on Pastoral Education which features an article written by Dr. Hempelmann. He references his 50th high school reunion at Saint Paul High School SPCH Class of ’57 has come out with the first edition of a class newsletter sent to class members by email.
SPCH ’58, SPC ’60; Alan E. Harre, Valparaiso, has announced that after two decades serving as president of Valparaiso University he will retire at the end of June 2008. Under Harre’s leadership the university increasingly enhanced the quality of education for students through improvements to academic programming and campus facilities. During his tenure, Valpo’s endowment grew from $37 million to approximately $190 million, providing scholarships for students and academic program study for faculty.
SPC ’58; Larry Stier, Benton, Louisiana, writes, “With thanks to God, I am retiring from the VAMC chaplaincy at Shreveport after 17 years and 43 plus years in the ministry. I have many fond memories of St. Paul’s College. I have many friends from that experience. My wife Carol and I have four children and five grandchildren.”
SPC ’63; Alvin E. Phillis, Topeka, Kansas, died July 14, 2007.
SPC ’63, Roy W. Swetnam, St. Louis, died December 19, 2006.
SPC ’68; Yvonne Du Sablon Mitkos, Staunton, Illinois, writes, “On May 13, 2007 I was awarded the Doctorate in Education from the University of Illinois- Urbana Champaign. This accomplishment was facilitated by my family, particularly my loving husband, Rev. Dr. Les Mitkos (SPCH ’65, SPC ’67) who retired from the LCMS active ministry April 15, 2007.
Class of SPCH ’70, William H. Pope, San Antonio, Texas, was recently commissioned as Major, Civil Affairs, in the Texas State Guard, and assigned as Assistant Operations and Training Officer for the 1st Regiment based in San Antonio. The Texas State Guard is an all-volunteer military force under the control of the governor of Texas. The 1st Regiment is responsible for emergency management and disaster relief in South Texas, from San Antonio to Brownsville, Corpus Christi to Laredo.
SPC ’74; Rodney “Sarge” Fritz, Hanover, Kansas, is serving in his 27th year as pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hanover. Sarge writes, “By the grace of God it has been my privilege to serve the Lord and His church in many different ways. I am now serving on the Board of Directors of the Kansas District, chairman of the Board of Administration for the district, serve on the Rural/Small town committee of the District, and circuit counselor for Zone 7. I have also served as pastoral advisor for the Kansas District LLL. My hobby is collecting John Deere items. I wish God’s blessings on all of the graduates of SPCH and SPC.”
Class of SPC ’75, Keith Christiansen, and SPLHS ’00, MaryKae Christiansen Broberg, Tilden, Nebraska, are the founders of Faith Moments, Inc. This internet-based service and resource ministry provides encouragement and materials to actively integrate Christian faith-building opportunities into every family schedule. At www.faithmoments.com you can see the ministry developed by Keith and MaryKae for children and families. New animated devotions are available each week, along with daily Bible readings, prayers, activities, and crafts.
SPCH ’76; Shirley Hanson Truog, Yorkville, Illinois, is the wife of Brian Truog (SPCH ’75, SPC ’76), pastor of Cross Lutheran Church in Yorkville. Shirley, in addition to being a pastor’s wife, is also a RN at the hospital in Yorkville.
SPCH ’78, SPC ’79; Nan Hanson Walsh, St. Petersburg, Florida, is an airport manger at Lakeland airport.
SPLHS ’96; Noelle Marth Hahn, Hope Mills, North Carolina, and her husband Thomas welcomed their second daughter, Kylee Isabel, born October 4, 2007. Big sister Kierra, two years old, is very happy and excited. Thomas is still serving in the U.S. Army, and Noelle is a stay-at-home mom and nanny.
SPLHS ’97; Rebekah Christiansen Sanders, Platte City, Missouri, writes, “My husband Will and I welcomed our daughter, Ariana Paige, on February 15, 2008. Our son Logan, age 4, is very excited to be a big brother.”
SPLHS ’97; Joel Oetting, and SPLHS ’05; Chris Maggert, both of Concordia, volunteered their time, expertise and equipment to construct a sidewalk from the parking lot west of the gym to the east door of Biltz Hall. Stan Palmer, also of Concordia, assisted in the project.
SPLHS ’99; Clinton Oetting and his wife Veronica Simms Oetting (Class of ‘99), San Clemente, California, had to evacuate their home during the 2007 wildfires in California, but were able to return to see their home completely intact.
SPLHS ’04; Nikki Vanderhoff, Seward, successfully completed her Student Teaching I at Seward Senior High School where she taught psychology and American history. For Student Teaching II Nikki is at Orange County Lutheran High School in Orange, California. Ron Royuk, Supervisor for Secondary Student Teaching said of Nikki, “She is a wonderful gift to the church thanks to the great preparation for university level work she received at Saint Paul.”
