SPCH ’31, SPC ’33, John Uhlig, Carlsbad, Cal., writes, “I am probably one of your oldest alumni! Class of 1933. Born in 1913. Living in a retirement community. Still lead my Bible class here. We reached session 500 in September. The Lord is good! His grace is our blessed assurance.” (See page 15 for oldest living SPC alumnus.)

SPCH ’40, SPC ’42, Harlan Wendler, Springfield, Ill., is the author of an electronic book, “God’s Desert Sheik,” published by Concordia Publishing House. It’s a story about the Patriarch Abraham from a biblical, historical, and archeological perspective along with the writer’s own reflections. Harlan and his wife led a tour to the Holy Land in 1978. They visited the excavated Abraham’s tomb at Hebron and Abraham’s Oak at Mamre. “God’s Desert Sheik” can be downloaded at www.concordiawriterscooperative.com.

SPCH ’44, SPC ’46, Alfred Rodewald, Concordia, and his wife Ruth celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They were married Aug. 12, 1951, at Vallonia, Ind., by Rev. H. M. Hansen, Ruth’s father. After serving as pastor of St. Paul’s Church in Concordia, the couple retired in Concordia, having now lived in the community for 38 years. They have five children: Michael of Pretoria, South Africa; Kathryn Oetting (SPC ’74) of Concordia; Christine Small (SPCH ’75, SPC ’76) of San Diego, Calif.; John (SPC ’82) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Benjamin (SPCH ’85) of Kansas City.

SPCH ’47, Albert Meier, Denham Springs, La., was inducted into the LSU College of Science Hall of Distinction on May 6, 2011. The program booklet states, “In 1964, he joined the LSU faculty as an associate professor and rose through the academic ranks. He was an Alumni Professor at the time of his retirement in 1994. A devoted teacher, he taught vertebrate physiology and endocrinology. He mentored 27 doctrinal students and 45 master’s students, many of whom went on to become medical doctors or professors. Along with former student, Dr. Anthony H. Cincotta, he formulated a drug that showed promising effects dealing with type 2 diabetes and lipogenesis. In 2009 the FDA granted approval and in 2010 it became available as one of the leading treatments for type 2 diabetes. Meier holds 40 U.S. and foreign patents associated with avian and mammalian reproduction or treatment of obesity and diabetes.”

SPCH ’50, SPC ’56, Marvin Schedler, Wilmington, N.C., writes, “Celebrated my 50th anniversary of ordination on June 26, 2011. Ordained at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sedalia by my father, Rev. J.C. Schedler, pastor at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stover. I served churches in Minnesota, Iowa, and North Carolina.”

SPCH ’51, Harold Kaden, Sacramento, Calif., writes, “Even though there were only four from SPCH ’51 present for our reunion last June, it was a great time to visit, especially to see what has been done with Biltz Hall! Thanks.”

SPCH ’52, SPC ’54, Donald Miesner, Ballwin, recently completed his book, Keys to Revelation: Messages in Letters, Symbols, and Patterns. For more about
he book, read the article on page 14 of this newsletter.

SPCH ’59, SPC ’61, Ralph Guetersloh, Galena, writes, “My wife Susie and I have moved from Omaha, Neb., to a home in the Branson, Mo., area. We are enjoying the retirement status.”

SPC ’59, Quentin Almstedt, St. Charles, writes, “Being retired, having served in four parishes in three different districts and vicaring in a fourth district — one dual parish with a campus ministry and another large congregation with a Christian elementary school — following a period of high school teaching math and physics (M.A. from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., B.S. Concordia, River Forest). SPC was surely influential in the Lord calling me to become a parish pastor (Springfield 1969).

SPC ’59, Norman Bahlow, Farmington, writes, “As a retired pastor, I have been preaching at various congregations in Missouri and Illinois as opportunities arise. For the past several years I have lived with relatives near De Soto. In August I moved to Farmington where I have been working for a company inspecting chrome automotive parts. For the past few years I have been in contact with Emmanuel Matirongo, a Christian evangelist, and his family in Zimbabwe. I met Emmanuel while he studied briefly at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. Emmanuel and his family continue to ask for our prayers and for any financial assistance for their family needs and mission outreach endeavors. SPC ’61, Ellen Scheidt Eich, Mount Airy, N.C., writes, “I’ve agreed to play the organ three Sundays a month for the next year at First Presbyterian Church in Mount Airy. Their previous organist served the congregation for 46 years. It’s an honor to carry on for them.”

SPCH ’64, SPC ’66, James Shears, Bartlett, Tenn., retired on Feb. 20, 2011; plays on the Praise Team at church; works part-time at Family Christian Stores; and gets in a few rounds of golf.

SPCH ’64, SPC ’66, Thomas Krause, and SPC ’67, Miriam Mueller Krause, Overland Park, Kan., have lived in Overland Park for the past 24 years, and “birthed” Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Leawood, Kan., in 1987, after serving 15 years in Texas. Since retirement from the pastoral ministry, the Krauses are busy arranging and leading Holy Land tours to Israel, Greece and more. Tom presently serves as interim Executive Director of Lutheran Urban Mission Agency of Kansas City, and is also chairman of the board of the Vitae Foundation, a national pro-life media ministry. Miriam leads Bible classes, mentors women, and speaks to women’s groups. They are blessed with four married children and 12 grandchildren (with another one
due in December)

SPC ’64, Edwin Rumerfield, Lebanon, Ore., is still serving full-time as pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. “Thanks to St. Paul’s College for preparation for this service.”

SPCH ’70, William “Skip” Pope, San Antonio, Texas, recently was awarded the Korean Defense Service Medal by the Army for serving two tours of duty in South Korea (1972-73 and 1988-89). William is pursuing a Master of Arts in Adult Learning and Teaching at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

SPCH ’78, SPC ’79, Tim Wesemann, St. Louis, writes, “Our daughter Sarah was married and now lives in Bay City, Mich. We adopted our foster child, age 4, whom we’ve had since her birth. So we have a daughter teaching preschool and one in preschool! Also a son in North Carolina and one at Valpo.”

SPCH ’80, Danl Connelly, Fort Monroe, Va., (moved from Fort Lewis, Wash.) has been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and is the new Deputy G-2 at the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC).

SPCH ’85, Ben Rodewald, Kansas City, has been elected president of Lutheran Leadership Education (LLE), replacing his father Alfred Rodewald, SPCH ’44, SPC ’46, who retired from the position. LLE provides scholarships for full-time church worker students.

SPCH ’89, Steve Sommerer, Carlyle, Ill., writes, “Remembering with love our dear friend and classmate Cory Muehler who went to be with our Lord and Savior 20 years ago. The class of ’89 was blessed to know him and share his life. Trusting in Jesus, we look forward to the day we gather together before His throne. Christ has risen, indeed.”

SPLHS ’94, Heather Heimsoth, Ellisville, married Timothy Liebnau on Sept. 4, 2011, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ellisville. To the right of Heather are her parents, Orlyn (SPCH ’65, SPC ’67) and Diane (Griffith) (SPC ’66). To the left of Timothy is Heather’s brother, Andrew (SPLHS ’89). Heather teaches second grade at St. John’s Lutheran School. Timothy is a product manager for Savvis Inc. of St. Louis.

SPLHS ’06, Sammy Williams, Kansas City, and Geoffrey Hughes were married March 5, 2011. Her bridesmaids were Karinann Benson (Class of 2006), Tana Dehning (’05) and Crystal Kirchhoff (’06). In May 2010, Sammy earned a B.A. degree in psychology/criminology from Drury University in Springfield.

SPLHS ’07, Candace Wagner, Sweet Springs, and Michael Merrick were united in marriage Sept. 17, 2011, at Zion Lutheran Church at Blackburn. Candace graduated from Independence College of Cosmetology in 2011 and is employed by Salon Elite in Concordia. Michael is employed by All Pro Electrical Technologies, Inc. at Warrensburg.

SPLHS ’08, Paul Hoppmann and SPLHS ’08, Jessica Mourey are engaged and plan a December 30 wedding at St. Paul’s Church in Concordia. Both attend the University of Alabama in Mobile. Paul will graduate in December 2012 with a degree in exercise science. Jessica will graduate in May 2012 with a degree in geology.

SPLHS ’08, Kelly Heins, Columbia, is one of three student leaders from the 32-member Alumni Associations Homecoming Steering Committee for this year’s Mizzou homecoming as they handle the blood drive, parade, talent show, and many other activities. In the classroom Kelly is majoring in elementary education. Her biggest surprise about college life is “I actually can do my own laundry.”

SPLHS ’11, Katie Kruse, Concordia, was second runner-up in the queen pageant at the 2011 Concordia Fall Festival. Katie is a freshman at University of Central Missouri, majoring in pre-occupational therapy, and planning to specialize in pediatrics.
