2007 Saint Paul Lutheran High Volleyball Preseason Preview
Head Coach: Art MacLean
Assistant Coaches: Jerry MacLean and Aaron Marsh
2006 Record: 21-11-3 I-70: 5-2
District 14 2-A Champions, 2nd I-70 Tournament, 2nd Northwest Tournament, 2 Lone Jack Tournament.
We lost 3 good seniors. Esther Mehl was a 2-A All State Selection and 2-A Academic All State Selection. Esther set our school kills record with 263 kills, our single season defensive digs record with 12 digs, and our career season digs record with 166 digs. Esther will be playing volleyball at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska. Megan Hinck was a 2-A All Regional player and a 2-A Academic All State player. Kendra Kraft was an All Tournament player at the Northwest, I-70, and District 14 2-A Tournaments.
We have 4 seniors and 1 junior starters returning in 2007. Outside hitter Haley Schelp was selected to the all tournament teams at Northwest, the I-70, District 14 2-A, and the All Regional Teams in 2006. Middle hitter Amanda Meineka broke two school scoring records in 2006. Amanda served 22 points in our win at Lincoln and 210 total points for the season. Shannon Vogelsmier will return at setter. Shannon was a 2-A District 14 All Tournament selection in 2006. Maddie Leimkuehler will return at the other middle hitter position. Junior outside hitter, Ashley Brackman was a 2-A All Regional selection.
Senior letter winners Jessica Mourey and Jill Mueller will see considerable playing time as well as sophomores Madison Krause and Taylor Vogelsmier. Freshman Dana Peters will also get playing time at middle hitter and setter.
We had a lot of improvement during our camp. Sophmores Courtney Schelp, Rachel Kreisel, Sara Reister, Sarah Heins, Mary Nebel, Elizabeth Hemme, and Elyse Luebbert will challenge the returning players for playing time. New players Samantha Mueller and Trisha Elledge also will make a major impact on our program.
Overall, it was one of the best preseason camps we have ever had. With three coaches, we were able to get a lot more accomplished. We now also have had two back to back classes with a lot of good athletes. Our team will be similar to last year’s team. We have a lot of quickness, experience, and depth. Our weakness is our shortness. Most of our players are 5’5” or shorter, so we will have to work harder to compensate for our lack of size.

We will have a very challenging opening week of volleyball when we play three 20 game winners from 2006. Perennial volleyball power, St. Mary’s placed 3rd in 2-A and has 3 returning players. Two of whom were all state players. Mark Dankenbring at Northwest led his team to one of their best years ever and he has everyone returning. Green Ridge’s winning tradition won a 1-A district title, and we will expect them to have their team ready for us.
Our coaching staff is enjoying working with our varsity and JV teams. Our players are working hard and are making tremendous progress. We are looking forward to the challenges of this coming year.
