DORM NEWS
Brust Hall (Boys Dorm)

Brust Hall welcomed its first students in January of 1954.  It was originally built to house the men of St. Paul’s College.  In the mid 1970’s, it was used to house the high school girls.  This year, as it has for many years, Brust Hall houses the high school boys.

Brust Hall was named for Pastor Brust, who served for many years as the pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, which is located two blocks south of Saint Paul Lutheran High School.  As pastor of St. Paul’s church, Pastor Brust was well known to all the students of St. Paul’s College and High School.

Today Brust Hall is once again filled with young men from around the world and from across the United States.  Numerous cultures and languages blend together as we learn and study together.

Brust also offers some recreational activities with a pool table and foosball table located on first floor, as well as a large screen projection television.  The large screen TV is a special point of pride for the dorm, as the boys in the dorm raised the money amongst themselves to purchase it for the lounge.

As it has for the last 56 years, Brust continues to serve as a home away from home to students, building lifetime friendships and preparing them for their life vocations.

Life in Moeller

For some students at Saint Paul, going back to school means going back to dorm life, but there is something unique about dorm life at Saint Paul, the different nationalities. I can’t think of another place to go where someone can make friends from Norway, China, Thailand, Slovakia, United States (from different states), Hong Kong, Taiwan, Madagascar, Macao, and South Korea all in the same place, and that’s just the girls dorm!
Getting to know all of the girls in my dorm is just one of the many things I have loved in my first few weeks here at Saint Paul. I graduated from Concordia University, Nebraska in May 2011 and I am very optimistic about my position as the Resident Hall Supervisor in Moeller. I have eight student assistants who have been very helpful and will make my first year a smooth transition. They are Emma Blanke, senior, Nebraska; Jo-Jo Lin, senior, Taiwan; Chelsea Nebel, senior, Illinois; Cindy Chen, junior, China; Hope Colwell, junior, Missouri; Samantha Heisleman, junior, California; Leah Hoffmann, junior, Illinois; and Alicia Royuk, junior, Nebraska.
Wal-Mart trips are definitely a must at the beginning of the year (it doesn’t change in college either)! There has already been a bus full of students on three separate occasions to Wal-Mart, and I’ve had students ask when the next trip will be. Evenings and weekends have been filled with playing games, watching movies, and of course, studying and doing homework (the students, not me).
I always begged my parents for a little sister when I was younger, and now I have 68 of them. I am very excited and looking forward to a great year.

“Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. And do
everything with love.” - 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Heilman Hall News

Heilman Hall has become the home for 18 young men this school year because of the overflow of boys in the other boys dorm, Brust Hall. All of these young men are upper classmen and come from a variety of countries, including China, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Norway, Slovakia, Taiwan, and the United States. Most of the students are returning to Saint Paul and know their way around the campus very well. A select few are here for the first time and are just beginning their experience at Saint Paul.

Our four SA's (student assistants) in Heilman Hall are all four-year seniors. Two of them, Louis Liu and Kevin Lee, are from Taiwan, while Mark Kinyanjui is from Kenya and Philip Sarpong is from Iowa. These young men have done a great job with helping new students getting settled, supervising the hall during study hours, and helping with things when I cannot be around. They will definitely be great leaders for Heilman Hall during the school year.

We look forward to the school year as we continue to get to know one another and enjoy all that Saint Paul has to offer. Hopefully, Heilman Hall will continue to do what Brust Hall has done in the past by serving as a home away from home for these young men, as they continue to build lifetime friendships and prepare for their life vocations.
